Weak Foot Drills

In this article, I’m going to show you 5 drills you can do on your own to work on your weak foot and become a more complete player.

Drill 1 - Shooting

  • For the first drill we’re going to practice dead ball shooting from various spots on the field.

  • The main focus of this drill is to work on your shooting accuracy and to get solid contact on the ball.

  • You can practice different types of shots; knuckleballs, curlers, trivelas, chips, etc…

  • We’ll work on striking a moving ball later on.

Drill 2 - Juggling

  • Start out using your dominant foot, mixing in your weak foot occasionally.

  • Next try alternating every touch on the ball.

  • Progress to primarily using the weak foot.

  • Finally, see if you can juggle only using the weak foot. Try to get 10 or more juggles in a row.

  • If you want to make this harder, kick the ball higher in the air and try to control it.

  • Apply this in training or matches by trapping long balls and goal kicks with your weak foot.

Drill 3 - Passing

  • You just need two balls for this drill.

  • Start with the balls close together and try to hit one with the other. If you miss, just switch to the other ball and try again.

  • As you get more accurate, move the ball further and further away.

  • Try using different parts of your foot and see how many hits you can get in a row.

  • If you want to increase the difficulty, get one ball rolling first and then try to hit.

Drill 4 - Dribble and Finish

  • Set up two cones at the top of the box.

  • Dribble towards the cones, cut inside, and finish.

  • Practicing finishing on all parts of the goal and vary the types of shot.

  • You can practice this from different parts of the field.

Drill 5 - Juggle, Turn, Finish

  • For the final drill we’re going to combine several of these.

  • Start with your back towards the goal, then do as many juggles as you want.

  • When you’re ready, take one touch to settle and turn, and then finish.

  • Practice finishing on different parts of the goal.

- Remember, while these drills are useful, if you want to really take your weak foot to the next level, you need to start practicing with it in game-like situations, even if that’s just starting out with short passes to a teammate.
