Puma Future Ultimate Review
The newly designed 2023 Puma Future Ultimate features a FUZIONFIT360 upper with dual mesh and supplemental PWRTAPE to provide support and lockdown with quick changes of direction.
The stud pattern has changed from the previous generation and although Puma markets this as FG/AG, the studs are much more aggressive and better suited to FG pitches. More on that later.
Upper
The newly designed FUZIONFIT360 upper provides a thin surface, with just the right amount of stretch and compression for flexibility and maximum comfort.
Asymmetrical collar to support natural foot anatomy.
The boots feature a textured surface for improved grip and PWRTAPE, which locks the foot down for a more adaptive and supportive fit.
The upper is very soft and comfortable with very little break in time required.
Fit/Sizing
Similar to the previous Puma Future models, these cleats fit ½ size big. I typically wear 8.5 and sized down to 8 for this model.
These are the widest of the three Puma models and for most people I recommend going down ½ size. However, if you have very wide feet or prefer a lot more space in the toes, you may consider going true to size.
After getting the sizing right, the boots fit me really well.
The mid cut collar fits really well and provides good lockdown, something which is lacking in the king and ultras.
Break in was very quick and I was able to wear them for a full game right away.
Weight
These Puma Future Ultimates weigh 7.58 oz (215g).
They are the heaviest of the 3 puma models, with the 2023 versions of the King and Ultra both weighing in at 7 oz in my normal size 8.5.
That said, they’re still fairly light compared to most control boots on the market.
Traction
The stud pattern has changed from the semi circular studs of the Puma Future 1.4, to a more aggressive, bladed stud pattern.
Puma markets these as FG/AG, but I would stick to natural grass as the blades are a bit more aggressive than previous generations.
I have also heard some complaints of poor durability on artificial grass.
I’ve been really liking this stud pattern on both firm and soft ground and have no complaints about slipping or stud pressure.
Durability
There are no signs of sole separation or any problems with durability so far. As I mentioned earlier I’ve heard some complaints about poor durability on artificial turf, but we’ll see if that’s the case or not with natural grass. I will give an update in a few months if I notice any changes.
Pros
Soft, comfortable upper.
Texture gives good grip without being sticky.
Good lockdown.
The stud pattern is very good for firm and even soft ground.
Cons
Sizing - they fit a ½ size big.
Studs not appropriate for artificial surfaces.
Overall I have really enjoyed wearing these cleats and they are probably going to be my main pair on natural grass. If you’re looking for a good all around boot for firm and soft grass I would definitely give these a try, just remember to go down a half size!
